Feng Shui Symbols
Colors, elements and symbols play a very important role in Traditional Feng Shui. Chinese symbols, such as wind chimes, three-legged toads and tortoises, are vital tools that help achieve harmony and balance inside the home. Such symbols invite enlightenment and a good environmental aura.
It is important that the symbols used during the process are highly sentimental; doesn’t really matter if they are traditional Chinese symbols. Not all people can afford statues and fountains. Or in some cases, using plants or animals for Feng Shui is not possible due to home-rental agreement issues. Symbolisms can be simple candles, photographs, or even furniture and decor; as long as they portray personal value. Symbols that have stronger association or a certain bond with a person work better and are more effective and compelling. Although this is so, the positioning and certain number of symbols placed in a home is still important and needs to be highly considered.
There are a lot of things that people would want to change in their lives; aspects that we may want to amend, or in Feng Shui terms, cure. Each of these facets uses different symbols to attract positive energy flow. In example, in terms of good luck and protection, traditional Feng Shui uses the symbols dragon, tortoise and a mystic knot. It is said that these symbols will bring you not only protection but also good fortune and a full life. Whether these symbols are on something you wear like a necklace or a home décor like a figurine, it’s completely up to you.
The symbol dragon does not only work in the aspect of protection and luck, but also, when correlated with a phoenix symbol, cures Love and Relationship dilemmas. Ever heard of the saying “it takes two to tango”? Well in Feng Shui, it is said that the Love aspect is best with partnered symbols. It is because an individual item may signify a lonely unmarried or solitary life. So if you are having Love issues, use paired symbols; mandarin ducks, matching candles, or even a crystal lotus that denotes romance.
As with problems with Wealth and Prosperity, symbols such as a gold Arowana, a Koi fish, Chinese coins and three-legged toads are very effective. A lot of people, especially with the economic crisis this country is experiencing right now, are hoping for financial stability. Traditionally, live bamboo plants or water fountains that are placed in certain areas of the house also invite money opportunities.
Feng Shui symbols don’t necessarily need to be conventional Chinese illustrations or images. In the modern days, people use similar representations other than traditional Chinese figurines or symbols. As long as the symbols used attract a certain energy that allows good emotional response, they can be used in the process. And since the mastery of Feng Shui works based on intentions and objectives, the use of substitute symbols, such as personal belongings and or photographs, can also attract positive energy flow as long as it is an object that one can relate to. This is an advantage to people of different cultures, especially those that are not comfortable using traditional Chinese objects.

Can Feng Shui Make Men Romantic?
| When I told my husband I was going to practice yoga, he mistakenly thought the improved flexibility of my body would make my opinions more flexible. When I told him I was going to have acupuncture, he didn't get the point - literally. John didn't believe inserting a needle between the two bones in my forearm would prevent nausea, but it does. I feel better on boats, on planes and when I listen to campaign promises. Because the Chinese were right about acupuncture, I decided they must be right about feng shui; and I feng shui'd our house. A bell by the front door leads luck in; a bell by the back door leads luck out. We didn't have a bell, so I moved the wind chimes to the front door. I thought that should work because wind chimes enhance luck. Dried flowers are good for decoration; but because they're dead flowers, they're bad for feng shui. Out they went. Out went the live plants in the bedroom because they create too much energy for sound sleep. Because live plants are good in rooms of sick people, I moved them into my husband's office. He wasn't sick, but he wasn't feeling good about feng shui. Not wanting the good energy in the house to be bad for my marriage, I put a lot of feng shui in our bedroom. Without the help of my doubting Thomas, I moved our bed. Sleeping with your feet facing the door is the death position. In my wedding vows I'd promised until death do us part, but I didn't want to be parted by our bed or have it turn into twin beds. Because any suggestion of water in the bedroom promotes misunderstanding, the painting of the ocean went into the living room. A mirror in the bedroom causes a third person to enter an otherwise good relationship. Even though my mother-in-law lives across the country, the mirror went into the entrance hall. Then because pairs promote romance, I put a picture of John and me on both sides of the bed. I was hoping a pair of the pair of us would double the romance. Actually, not using feng shui in our new house was what improved the romance. In our new house I left the feng shui to Mother Nature. Water provides good energy and I have the Pacific Ocean for a backyard. |

Feng Shui for Different Home Areas
The kitchen
- The stove must be away from the door, but the cook should be able to see the door. If not possible, install a mirror.
- Never position the stove opposite the sink, refrigerator, or dishwasher. A clash of the elements fire and water is not a good idea.
- Keep your cupboard and refrigerator well stocked with food supplies. It implies wealth and abundance.
- Avoid positioning the stove directly in front of a window. Placing the stove to the side of a window is better.
The bathroom or toilet
- Never place the toilet opposite the kitchen. The feng shui fire and water elements will clash in this situation.
- The toilet must not be placed adjacent to the front door. Place the toilet somewhere far away from the front door.
- Avoid positioning the toilet door directly opposite the front door. This may lead to wasted opportunities.
- Place a huge mirror behind the bathroom sink. But never use the kind that is split in the middle, often seen in bathroom cabinets.
- Make sure that the plumbing fixtures in the bathroom and toilet are not leaking, especially the faucets.
The bedroom
- The bedroom should not be adjacent or opposite to a bathroom or toilet. If this is unavoidable, make sure you keep the bathroom or toilet door closed at all times.
- Position the bed as far away from the door as possible. But make sure you still have a good view of the door from the bed. At the same time, do not place your bed where your feet are pointed towards the door when you are sleeping.
- Mirrors should not be placed where they reflect your image as you sleep. Round and oval shaped mirrors are ideal, but make sure they are larger than your head.
- Sleeping directly on the floor is not suggested as it does not allow the Chi to flow beneath you.
The stairway
- Traditionally, the favorable number of steps in a stairway is an odd number. A spiral staircase is also a blunder because it confuses the Chi.
- The worst mistake that can happen is when the staircase leads directly to the front door. This leads to the loss of opportunities, and the residents tend to be always rushing, seldom settling in.
- A good way to slow down the flow of Chi outside the front door is to hang a wind chime on the ceiling above the base of the staircase. A heavy figurine at the floor level below may also act helpful.
Lobbies and hallways
- Hallways need to be free of impediments and are needed to be well lit. It should also be clear to anyone where they are to go next in the house.
- A nice piece of art may be hung on the wall to the end of a hallway. However, never place a mirror there; it will only reflect back the entering Chi.
- There should be no hallway in the house that leads directly to a toilet. If it is already there, just make sure the door is closed at all times.
These are some tips to overcoming and preventing Chi flow problems, giving you a harmonious feng shui home.
